Blending in?

Today I noticed something while I was on the bus, going home after a long day in the office: no one seemed to be looking at me. Where there used to be blatant staring, pointing fingers and excited cries of laowai! laowai! there was just indifference. Maybe they were just tired. Maybe they are used to seeing me riding the bus. Or is it that I am starting to blend in?

But no, let’s be serious. Even though I have been here for 6 years, even though I speak Chinese the whole day, I will always be a high-nosed, big-eyed, wide-hipped laowai. It is too obvious.
